Lawmakers have reintroduced a bipartisan bill to boost the US trucking industry. The bill, known as The Strengthening Supply Chains Through Truck Driver Incentives Act, aims to address the driver shortage crisis and improve road safety through increased training and access to employment opportunities for new drivers.

The trucking industry is a critical component of the US economy, responsible for moving goods and products across the country. However, the industry has been struggling with a shortage of qualified drivers, which has led to increased costs and delays in delivery times. The Strengthening Supply Chains Through Truck Driver Incentives Act seeks to address this issue by providing new drivers with an opportunity to enter the industry and receive proper training.

“The bill would establish a two-year refundable tax credit of up to $7,500 for truck drivers with a valid Class A commercial driver’s license who drive at least 1,900 hours in a year. It would offer a two-year refundable tax credit of up to $10,000 for new drivers or people in a registered trucking apprenticeship.”

The Strengthening Supply Chains Through Truck Driver Incentives Act has received widespread support from various stakeholders in the industry, including trucking associations and safety groups. Supporters of the bill argue that it will help to alleviate the driver shortage crisis while improving safety on the roads by ensuring that newer drivers receive proper training before being allowed to drive for interstate commerce.

The Strengthening Supply Chains Through Truck Driver Incentives Act will promote the growth and sustainability of the US trucking industry. The bill has the potential to create new employment opportunities and ensure that goods and products are moved safely and efficiently across the country.

CNBC reports, “Ten advocacy organizations representing the trucking industry, including the American Trucking Associations and American Loggers Council, have backed the bill.”

President and CEO of the American Trucking Associations (ATA), Chris Spear, says, “This bipartisan legislation will make a meaningful difference in the lives of new truckers, helping them move into one of the few professions in today’s economy that can provide a middle-class lifestyle without the time and expense of a four-year college degree.”
