ILWU Contract Negotiations Begin

ILWU contract negotiations began on May 12 ahead of the current contract’s expiration that will occur at midnight on July 30th. Representatives from the Pacific Maritime Association and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union are currently meeting in San Francisco to discuss labor contracts for the 29 west coast ports. Both sides are looking to avoid a work stoppage and are confident that cargo will continue to move until the two parties come to an agreement.

According to the Journal of Commerce, the ILWU is seeking a three year contract. Members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union are looking to protect jobs, benefits, and safety. The Pacific Maritime Association understands the importance of maintaining market share as west coast ports have faced increased competition in Canada and Mexico, which would be compromised in the event of a work stoppage at the ports. An agreement is ideal for both sides to encourage container growth at the ports and to aid economic development.

ILWU contract negotiations are expected to continue daily until an agreement is reached.
